Lessons from Year One at Catalystics
Earlier this month, Catalystics celebrated its first anniversary as a full-time venture. Twelve months in, I can see how much I've learned and the ways this company's mission has grown and firmed up.
Reflecting back from that sunny July day on my patio a year ago, the biggest takeaway isn't about the breakthrough technology solutions we helped deliver. The real discoveries were about the organizations and people we serve. Here's what we learned, what's changing, and where we're headed next.
Technology is just a way to get where you're going. It's not the destination.
While clients hire us to help deliver working systems, building a database or working software is not the end goal. It's just the starting point of a larger conversation about the things that really motivate them.
My clients want to grow, tell their stories, make better decisions, and be indispensable to their members. When done right, technology is a tool that helps them achieve these things and make a real impact on the world.
Our job is to understand the "why" behind these desires and provide the "how" in the form of right sized tools to help make them a reality. A year of working with clients has made me a more able translator and guide along this path.
Empowering "Many Hats" Generalists
Regardless of organization size, most association professionals share a common working style. At their heart, they are generalists. These small teams juggle large portfolios of different assignments, some of which require completely distinct skill sets. On any given day you might be called upon to be a diplomat, an analyst, a salesperson, a manager, an event coordinator, or some combination of all of these before lunch.
While they value and depend on expert help from outside, people within these organizations aim to be self-reliant. Helping these curious, can-do people level up and do more for themselves is rewarding and fun. More importantly, it means we're moving forward towards more impactful, strategic work together as their capabilities grow.
Democratizing Data
In addition to getting to know my clients better, one of my secondary goals was to watch for common gaps that I come across while exploring their various systems. A lot of the headaches you see at one organization inevitably pop up at another.
It didn't take very long to pick up on the theme of my first year. My clients all suffer in some way from fragmented data that doesn't tell them the whole story.
Most associations rely on Association Management Systems (AMS) to handle their core member records and daily operations. These systems work well for many things, but tend to fall short for anything beyond basic reporting.
If their question happens to involve looking back in time or combining data from multiple systems/external sources, they're pretty much on their own. Even if they can cobble something together with Excel, modifying or repeating this work in the future can be an error-prone, labor-intensive process.

Thanks to innovations in cloud storage and modern open-source data tooling designed to work well on "small" datasets (DuckDB, Evidence), we've been able to quickly deliver high-quality data modeling, pipelines, and custom analytics to places (and price points) where they've rarely been seen before. Of all the things I've been able to demonstrate to my clients, this has generated some of the most excitement. They immediately start imagining new possibilities and asking more questions.
A Look Ahead at Year Two
If the first year was about finding our footing and delivering solutions, the central theme for year two at Catalystics is helping build analytics capabilities.
To make this a reality, we are drawing closer to the organizations we serve, emphasizing self-reliance by growing internal skills and helping deliver more flexible data platforms.
Coaching and Training Association Professionals
The work that energizes me most of all is helping people learn, advancing their organization's and personal skills in the process. In an industry that is known for being staffed by "doers", our role is to amplify their impact.
Through workshops, coaching, and training opportunities, we will mentor and work alongside association leaders to address today's challenges through deepening their analytics and data storytelling skills, both with and without technology.
Finely Tailored Data Platforms

An off-the-shelf data analytics platform is like a suit you buy off the rack at a department store. The size label gives you a general idea of the fit, but it really doesn't reach its full potential until a tailor carefully adjusts it to your exact contours.
It's an eye for detail and those small alterations that can be the difference between something you never look at and something you reach for instinctively. Catalystics will be breaking out the tape measure this year and making our customers look like a million bucks.
Digging Deeper Into "Why?"
We live in uncertain times. Member-driven organizations are finding ways to hold steady, but are grappling with a convergence of social and economic trends that are shifting what it means to remain viable and serve their members and communities for the long haul.
When it comes to addressing challenges with technology and data, you don't need more things. You need the right things.
That starts by stepping back and understanding the decision process itself. Only when the uncertainties surrounding decisions are understood can data produce clarity and leverage.
I Never Walk Alone
Above all, this is a relationship business. My commitment to building capabilities isn't just limited to my direct relationships with associations.
Just as a healthy association is more than the sum of its membership, collaborating with my professional colleagues who serve similar clients has greatly expanded my reach and impact. Like a group of superheroes, it's energizing to combine our unique talents and accomplish projects that were once considered beyond the reach of small teams.

These relationships have brought me business stability, new perspectives, and rewarding personal friendships. Together, we can address nearly any challenge put in front of us. Shared success works!
Here's to What's Next
As I finish this post, I find myself once again on the patio on a hot July afternoon.
I'm reminded how easy it can be to take this career path for granted. It took countless innovations and the support of many people to give me the chance to pursue this path. I'm truly grateful for this chance, and pleased to see this company finding its way to becoming as helpful as I think it can be.
In a time of uncertainty and opportunity, we're helping build capacity for agility, change, and better decisions.
Thanks for inviting us along. I look forward to seeing what we help you achieve!
